Brace yourself, since every year beginning in 1999, Pantone chooses a defining hue. This pick is a reflection of the zeitgeist—informing everything from how we feel and what we wear to how we design our living spaces. Last year's hue was the deep beige "a creamy brown," which came after the soft and warm "a fuzzy pastel."

This year's choice, though, is somewhat unexpected. It is "an airy shade," described by a "billowy, balanced white."

Laurie Pressman, VP of the Pantone Color Institute, commented that it is "a pivotal neutral tone … permitting all colors to be highlighted."

Well, Cloud Dancer sounds… seriously, white? Are they joking? Can white truly be considered a proper color?

Can you even define the hue of a cloud? Milk? Although many view white as a color, the entire spectrum is at its core a perception of light wavelengths. You can find it in a set of colored pencils, so in everyday terms the answer is yes.

The question of whether Pantone is being provocative is more difficult to ascertain. According to their release, Cloud Dancer combines easily with other colors, isn't overstimulating, declares simplicity, and exudes quiet sophistication.

Responses from critics, however, has proven more critical. A number of observers have declared Pantone of being completely "Pantonedeaf." Trend analyst Mandy Lee described it as "underwhelming." Some have even compared it with coded promotion of controversial ideas seen in popular culture.

Okay, it's to be hoped they're blissfully unaware that now is a sensitive time to be explicitly championing whiteness... Therefore, how can a regular person not exactly adjacent to a catwalk use this trend in my world? I recently coated my ceiling with white, is that enough?

It's interesting you mention fashion shows, as many collections this year have been vibrantly colorful, featuring eco-friendly fabrics on the catwalk.

White ensembles were present, as always, in luxury shows—from elegant blouses to sleek suits. Celebrities and public figures have also been photographed in monochromatic white attire at prestigious shows.

The good news is: you probably already have items in this "understated" color of the year. As Pressman, Cloud Dancer "embodies a eco-friendlier decision for the environmentally aware," which might translate to not having to buy anything new at all.
